Aline skid-base chair reference - Wilhelm Busch Museum

International Centre of Satirical Art

The society was founded to showcase the works of Wilhelm Busch. From the 1950s a unique collection of satirical art was added. The collection included the biggest compilation of the art and writings of Wilhelm Busch. Featured are the illustrated stories in verse of Max and Moritz, Fipps the monkey and Helen Who Couldn’t Help It, as well as over 40,000 works by satirical artists over four centuries. Bequests from F. K. Waechter and Volker Kriegel contributed English caricature from the 18th century, caricatures by artists from the German satirical magazine Simplicissimus, or the artists from the New Frankfurt School. Ronald Searle’s bequest, or recently the entire works of Marie Marcks are other attractions. During its history, the museum has managed to combine collections, exhibitions, the library and archive with new ways of putting art across, making it an international centre of satirical art. The city of Hanover, the state of Lower Saxony, foundations, institutes and companies, as well as the friends of the museum are vital pillars of support to the exhibitions. With its varied range of exhibitions and events, the museum is an internationally acclaimed and lively place with guests from all over the world. It consistently offers new art, encounters with art and artists, as well as opportunities for debate at an academic level. The exhibitions invite visitors to delve into the diverse world of caricature, cartoons and comics, but also children’s book illustration or fashion drawings. Even famous artists, like German icon Loriot, surprise and delight their fans by revealing new facets. Young talents and unknown artistic worlds are there to be discovered.

The accompanying events are entertaining, foster creativity and look at exhibitions in more depth. The museum’s team likes to combine culture with entertainment. Traditional guided tours, relaxed readings, poetry slams, unusual concerts or culinary excursions are all part of the offering. And after visiting an exhibition, the garden, café and museum shop tempt visitors to come and take a break, linger and browse.
